Updated pictures!

So happy to say that I bought a memory card reader so I can now upload my pictures more regularly!

Anyways, I will write an update soon but we just spent a wonderful weekend with my dad in Kenya. We had the opportunity to see the work he has been doing, training medical students and residents in ultrasound at a hospital in Eldoret, and we also went to visit Lake Nakuru National Park. Pictures speak better than words so I hope you enjoy the few I was able to put up!

    Wow! Beautiful pictures. You saw so much wildlife and so close!!
    Now I know why people go to Kenya for Safaris and not Uganda. And you stayed in such luxury.
    Hope that the food was also good.

    Yes great pics, and I thought that I saw great wildlife , we saw one deer ,this week end camping in Tremblant.

Bagan: a beautiful, magical place

Bagan This past weekend I traveled to Bagan (in Central Myanmar) with Sophie, Andi and Sarah. Bagan is absolutely incredible and if you're ever in the area, its definitely worth the really cold bus ride. I was just excited to get out of the city and spend some time in the nature and the sun, but Bagan is so much more than that. Bagan was the capital of the Pagan kingdom from the 9th to the 13th century (the kingdom that unified the regions that now make up modern-day Burma). I read that there were over 10,000 temples at one point in the region, and there are now over 2000 scattered around a 50 square km region. It really is absolutely stunning. Pictures are really the only way of representing the beautify, so this post is less writing, and more a mini photo essay. A wonderful weekend hanging out and traveling around Yangon

Since I only had two more weekends left, I decided to try and see many of the places I'd been wanting to explore since I got here - and it was great :) The weekend started a little crazily - on Friday afternoon it rained incredibly hard for a really long time. I was supposed to meet my friend Sophie for dinner, but with the incredible amounts of flooding on the road, it took almost 2 hours to get uptown. So instead, we met up at the tailor-shop where we'd gotten fitted for clothes 5 weeks ago. My dress was definitely worth the wait; the tailor used beautiful traditional material to make a really pretty summer dress for me. Somehow she made it a little too small (seriously this is really difficult ... even in Burma), but she was able to fix it and I wore it out that night :) The next morning, I woke up early and went to meet one of my Burmese friends, Sit Maw, at the zoo. Coming to terms with inequality in Burma

Burma is a country of inequalities. Thousands of people live in close to destitute conditions in the downtown core - in small apartments in buildings from the early 20th century on streets that flood with day's garbage in the monsoon rains. They ride buses packed full with people hanging off the sides in the 100 F heat and now live in constant fear of displacement in the midst of rapid gentrification and modernization projects sponsored by the government and foreign businesses. This is Burma's urban reality But down the street from these realities are beautiful, modern, luxurious (and often foreign-owned) hotels. Surrounding these hotels are restaurants unaffordable to the local population serving French, American, and Italian cuisine. You can buy "traditional" jewelry that costs more than a doctor's monthly salary. And further North in the city are entire neighbourhoods of mansions and beautifully manicured parks.
